Job Description:
This is an internal position in Washington National Tax to provide thought leadership to the Baker Tilly tax practice and clients. This position is ideal for tax specialists who want to expand their technical skills and build a career in a specific field of tax. We are seeking a strong individual with deep knowledge and demonstrated experience in the taxation of compensation and benefits. Highly preferred to be connected to a Baker Tilly office.

What you will do:
• Provide tax technical support and insight to team members in the tax, audit, consulting and internal HR practices on employee benefits and executive compensation issues affecting projects for the team’s clients; this may include ERISA, qualified retirement plans, fringe benefits, golden parachutes, deferred compensation, and equity compensation
• Brief team members on the relevant issues, attend client meetings with the team member, and review the issues with the client or its legal counsel or advisors directly. It is anticipated that the delivery of these services will involve the preparation of emails and planning memos, as well as conference calls and meetings
• Apply relevant tax authority to real-word situations
• Responsible for keeping abreast of current developments and preparing tax alerts for the Firm designed to advise team members on current developments coming out of Washington and the courts as they relate to their practice)
• Draft internal and external tax communications regarding new developments in compensation and benefit matters
• Responsible for both formal (internal and external participation in seminars and conferences) and informal employee benefit/executive compensation training in the context of the tax, audit and consulting practices, preparation of articles for publication in professional journals or treatises and participation in government hearings and conferences on behalf of the accounting profession
• Work with other specialty groups on issues that overlap with other technical matters such as corporate taxation and partnerships
• Participate in tax research projects
• Develop recommendations and share with leadership to discuss and strategize
• Draft internal and external communications based on IRS regulations and related guidance, and federal legislation regarding executive compensation and employee benefits
• Assist the National Controversy Group with technical employee benefits/executive compensation support in connection with clients undergoing tax examinations by the Internal Revenue Service
• Learn and grow from direct on the job coaching and mentoring along with participating in firm wide learning and development programs
Successful candidates will have:
• Bachelor's degree in accounting or law, or a similar degree in business
• CPA or JD required
• Extensive knowledge and experience relating to the taxation of compensation and benefits, including IRC 409A, 83, 162(m), and 280G in both privately and publicly held companies
• Minimum 7-15 years of experience in executive compensation, with emphasis on or transaction related compensation issues, and in employee benefits
• 5+ years of supervisory experience
• 10+ years of experience with a large accounting firm, law firm or relevant tax policy-making entity.
• Demonstrated strong research, analytical, critical thinking, and project management skills
• Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to provide exceptional client service, demonstrate commitment to continuous learning in order to stay current regarding applicable strategies, see the "big picture" as well as the details, display appropriate ethical knowledge and commitment, and exhibit a sense of urgency and commitment to quality and the timely completion of projects
• Ability to modify their schedule on a daily/weekly basis as tax developments occur
The pay rate ranges for this position are listed below. Actual compensation is influenced by a variety of relevant factors including but not limited to applicant’s skills, prior experience, qualifications, degrees, professional certifications, work arrangements and geographic location. Baker Tilly offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package to eligible employees.
The national pay rate range is $109,460 to $207,530
In California: pay rate range is $115,900 to $207,530
