Growing together.  The Clinical Decision Support (CDS) Engineering team, a unit within the Optum Insight Technology organization is responsible for building commercial products helping payers and providers with administrative and clinician focused CDS solutions.  We are seeking a senior engineer who can bring deep expertise across software, data, and AI/ML disciplines to enhance existing CDS solutions as well as the development of exciting new products.  CDS is an area that truly touches payers, providers, as well as members and one where you can have a huge impact on improving the healthcare system for everyone.  You will enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. Primary Responsibilities:  Own the design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of complex software components and services across the product lifecycle  Use AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Copilot, Codex) to accelerate development, generate boilerplate, improve test coverage, and explore implementation options  Review, validate, and refine AI-generated code to ensure correctness, security, maintainability, and compliance with enterprise standards  Design scalable, reliable, and maintainable solutions aligned with enterprise architecture and engineering standards  Write clean, secure, well-documented, and testable code following best practices and coding standards  Lead technical problem-solving efforts for complex or ambiguous engineering challenges  Perform and lead code reviews, ensuring quality regardless of whether code is human- or AI-generated   Collaborate with product managers, architects, and cross-functional partners  Mentor engineers on effective and responsible use of AI coding tools, including prompt quality and validation practices   Identify opportunities to improve system performance, reliability, and security  Identify opportunities to improve developer productivity, system quality, and operational efficiency through automation and AI adoption  You’ll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear directions on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in. Required Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field  4+ years of experience in the software engineering profession  4+ years of development experience with languages such as Java, .NET, or Python  3+ years of development experience with either front-end technologies (such as ReactJS, Angular, or Typescript) OR 3+ years data engineering and Business Intelligence (BI) development experience  2+ years of Public Cloud experience  1+ years of Healthcare Industry experience  1+ years of AI/ML development experience Preferred Qualifications:  Experience with software development methodologies such as Agile and Scrum  Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills  Ability to work effectively in a team environment  Experience with cloud computing platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud  An understanding of software development best practices and design patterns  Experience with DevOps practices and tools  Knowledge of containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes  Experience with microservices architecture  Familiarity with front-end technologies such as React, Angular, or Vue.js  Experience leveraging AI Tooling (Codex, Claude Code, Copilot) to accelerate development  Experience establishing best practices for AI-assisted development  *All Telecommuters will be required to adhere to UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy.     Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $91,700 to $163,700 annually based on full-time employment.
