Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Hansell Tierney is an advanced nuclear energy and engineering organization focused on next-generation power generation systems. They are seeking a Software Development & DevOps Engineer to provide technical leadership in the design, development, and maintenance of scientific software systems that support high-performance computing workloads and engineering simulation workflows.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical ownership of software architecture and development practices supporting long-term scalability and reliability
- Design, develop, and maintain features and refactor existing systems with emphasis on performance and maintainability
- Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and containerized environments
- Support HPC workload scheduling systems (e.g., SLURM or equivalent) for scientific computing workflows
- Ensure software development practices align with regulated environment requirements, including traceability and documentation standards
- Improve release processes by reducing manual steps and strengthening automation and regression testing
- Collaborate with engineering, IT, and analysis teams to support integrated simulation and workflow systems
- Provide technical mentorship and onboarding for developers in a complex scientific software environment
- Identify and reduce technical debt through modernization and improved design patterns
Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or related field, or equivalent experience
- 10+ years of software development experience (or advanced degree equivalent)
- Strong experience building scientific software that schedules or manages HPC workloads (e.g., SLURM)
- Strong background in CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern DevOps practices
- Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Apptainer, or equivalent)
- Strong proficiency in Python and Git-based development workflows
- Experience working in software quality assurance–regulated environments (e.g., NQA-1 or similar)
- Strong communication, analytical thinking, and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical initiatives
- Experience supporting engineering or nuclear simulation software environments
- Familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure and workflows
- Experience with automated documentation systems
- Exposure to compiled languages such as C++, Fortran, or Rust
- Understanding of numerical methods or reactor/physics-based modeling systems
- Experience working in multi-repository or platform engineering environments
