Role Summary – Distributed Systems Engineer (L4) – Data Platform
We are seeking a seasoned Distributed Systems Engineer to join our Data Platform team. In this role, you will design, build, and operate the core data infrastructure that powers careerzynith’s streaming services, recommendation engines, and emerging gaming experiences. You will work remotely from anywhere in the United States, collaborating with cross‑functional teams to deliver sub‑millisecond query performance, robust data pipelines, and resilient storage solutions that support billions of daily interactions.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect Scalable Data Services: Design and implement distributed data stores, query layers, and storage engines that meet the demanding latency and throughput requirements of careerzynith’s micro‑services ecosystem.
- Build High‑Performance Query Platforms: Develop and maintain flexible query pipelines that integrate with columnar stores, OLAP engines, and real‑time analytics frameworks such as Trino, Druid, and Iceberg.
- Collaborate Across Teams: Partner with product owners, TPMs, and fellow engineers to translate business needs into technical specifications, ensuring alignment with long‑term product roadmaps.
- Open‑Source Stewardship: Contribute to careerzynith’s open‑source projects, publish libraries, and engage with the broader community to drive innovation and share best practices.
- Performance Tuning & Optimization: Conduct deep‑dive profiling, identify bottlenecks, and implement optimizations that improve query latency, storage efficiency, and overall system reliability.
- Reliability Engineering: Implement robust monitoring, alerting, and automated recovery mechanisms to achieve “five‑nine” availability for critical data services.
- Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing: Guide junior engineers, lead design reviews, and foster a culture of continuous learning within the data platform organization.
Essential Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of hands‑on experience building large‑scale distributed systems or data platform components.
- Strong proficiency in Java and at least one additional object‑oriented language (e.g., Scala, Kotlin, C++).
- Demonstrated experience with SQL‑based analytics engines such as Trino (Presto), Druid, or similar technologies.
- Solid understanding of distributed storage concepts, including replication, sharding, and consistency models.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Proven ability to design and ship production‑grade services that operate at petabyte scale.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills, with a track record of tackling ambiguous, high‑impact challenges.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with cloud‑native platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker).
- Familiarity with data lake technologies such as Iceberg or Delta Lake.
- Background in building real‑time streaming pipelines using Apache Flink, Kafka, or similar frameworks.
- Contributions to open‑source projects or a public GitHub profile showcasing relevant work.
- Knowledge of machine learning pipelines and how data platforms support model training and inference.
- Experience with performance profiling tools (e.g., JFR, Perf, BPF) and large‑scale benchmarking.
Core Skills & Competencies
- Systems Thinking: Ability to see the big picture of data flow across micro‑services, storage layers, and analytics tools.
- Collaboration: Strong communication skills for working with product, data science, and operations teams in a remote environment.
- Adaptability: Comfort with rapidly evolving technology stacks and willingness to experiment with new paradigms.
- Ownership: Proactive mindset to take end‑to‑end responsibility for features from design through production support.
- Security Awareness: Understanding of data privacy, encryption, and compliance requirements in a global streaming context.
