Role overview: This internship offers a valuable opportunity to work closely with the passionate staff of an independent publisher. The internship is designed to afford a broad perspective of independent book publishing, with one half of the term led by the editorial department and the other led by the marketing, sales, and publicity department. Responsibilities: • Evaluating select submissions • Providing additional proofreads on finished manuscripts • Assisting in the development of publicity and marketing lists • Researching comp titles • Other projects as-needed • Participating in company meetings • Participating in staff-led learning units that cover multiple aspects of the industry Compensation and Benefits: • $16.50/hour Location: This is a 100% remote position open to applicants based in California, New York, and Rhode Island. Interns living within a commutable distance of Manhattan may have the option to work partially onsite at our office in Chelsea. Requirements: • Familiarity with basic administrative tasks • Familiarity with telework software • Consistent access to a computer • Consistent access to internet • Able to work 16 hours per week during Soho Press's regular business hours (10 am – 6 pm Eastern Time) • Highly recommended that applicants be available to work minimum 3-hour shifts • Highly recommended that applicants be available to work Wednesday and Thursday afternoons to attend standing department meetings • Must be at least 18 years of age by start date • Must reside in one of the following states for the duration of the internship term: California, New York, or Rhode Island • Must be legally permitted to work in the United States Ideal Candidate: An ideal candidate is a critical, passionate, and confident reader possessing: • A strong understanding of grammar • An eagerness to learn about the publishing industry • An eagerness to learn about the holistic workings of an independent publisher • An ability to multitask • An ability to prioritize overlapping assignments • Basic familiarity with Soho Press and its imprints Applications are welcome from students and adults at any stage in their career, as well as candidates who have not yet had traditional publishing experience.
