Company Description
Atmosphere Press is an author-friendly book publisher that prioritizes meaningful and rewarding author experiences above all else. We provide editorial, design, distribution, and publicity services for authors, and are an ethics-forward alternative to traditional or self-publishing. Our mostly remote team of 70 is stable, with a positive, autonomous, and mutually supportive culture. With a TrustPilot score of 4.7, Atmosphere was founded in 2015 by an author and PhD in Literature, and since then has published more than 2000 books.
Position Overview:
We're seeking a skilled Proofreader (with occasional copy editing) for book manuscripts. All of our books---we publish about 300 a year---have to go through proofreading once they are done with developmental editing, and before they move on to interior layout and design. So, we're on the search for eagle-eyed experts who can catch all mistakes, follow procedures to a tee, and can meet a deadline. We use CMOS for U.S. manuscripts, and have an in-house style guide to help with consistency.
The role is fully remote, and you can specify how many manuscripts you'd like to have at a time. Two is fine, three is better, and if you're an ace, we'd be happy to keep you busy with manuscripts. The production schedule is always moving!
Responsibilities:
● Proofread full-length book manuscripts in line with house style with a 7-10-day turnaround.
● Collaborate with our team on ensuring a quality final product
● Track projects in HubSpot so others are notified as to project status
● Use AI tools where appropriate to eliminate manuscript errors
Requirements:
● World-class proofreading skills
● Familiarity with Microsoft Word Track Changes
● AI awareness and ability to seek and implement AI tools to assist in task completion
● Ability to use a CRM (HubSpot) to track projects
● Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver on time.
● Excellent communication skills and a proactive, collaborative approach.
What We Offer:
● Flexible, project-based work with opportunities for ongoing collaboration.
● A creative, 100% remote environment where your work directly supports authors in producing a professional book product
Position Details

● Hours: 10-20 hours per week as a 1099 contractor
● Reports to: Alex Kale, Book Production Director
● Start Date: As soon as possible
● Location: 100% Remote
