About the position
Wilkes County Veterinary Services is a well-established mixed animal veterinary hospital serving Washington, GA and the surrounding rural communities. Our team provides comprehensive care to a wide range of patients—from companion animals to livestock—delivering high-quality medicine with a strong focus on client relationships and community impact. This is a dynamic, hands-on role supporting veterinarians across small animal appointments, large animal cases, and on-call emergencies. Candidates should be comfortable working in a fast-paced clinical environment as well as traveling for farm calls, assisting with urgent and routine care for large animals. Participation in the on-call rotation is a key component of this position, supporting emergency care needs for both small and large animal patients outside of standard business hours.
Responsibilities
• Assist veterinarians with examinations, treatments, and procedures for both small and large animals
• Prepare and restrain patients safely for exams, diagnostics, and surgery
• Monitor anesthesia and support surgical procedures and recovery
• Assist with farm calls and field services, including handling livestock and supporting ambulatory care
• Prepare equipment and supplies for off-site visits
• Support veterinarians during after-hours emergency calls, including large animal cases
• Perform laboratory testing, radiographs, and basic diagnostics
• Administer medications, vaccines, and fluids as directed
• Maintain accurate and detailed patient records
• Communicate effectively with clients, providing education and updates on patient care
• Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked treatment environment
Requirements
• High school diploma or equivalent required
• 1+ years of experience in a veterinary clinic or animal hospital preferred
• Strong interest in mixed animal veterinary medicine (large and small animal care)
• Confidence handling both companion animals and livestock
• Comfortable working in a clinical setting and on farms/rural environments
• Ability to remain calm and effective during emergency and on-call situations
• Strong teamwork, communication, and organizational skills
• Ability to lift 40+ lbs and work on your feet for extended periods
• Willingness to learn, adapt, and support a wide variety of cases
Nice-to-haves
• Experience with large animals (equine, livestock) strongly preferred
• Credentialed Veterinary Technicians (LVT, RVT, CVT) encouraged to apply
• Graduate of an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology program within the last 3 years (for HeadStart Program)
• Successfully passed the VTNE (for HeadStart Program)
• Holds or is eligible for Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) licensure in Georgia (for HeadStart Program)
