Position Overview:
As General Counsel at Mothers to Daughters, you will lead the organization’s global legal strategy, setting long-term priorities and managing the legal budget to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. You will serve as a key advisor to the Board of Directors and executive leadership, providing strategic guidance on critical initiatives and overseeing the organization’s most sensitive legal matters. As part of our dynamic and mission-driven team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our organization and advancing our mission.
Key Responsibilities:
Serve as a trusted legal advisor to the leadership team and Board of Directors, providing counsel on governance matters and drafting, reviewing, and maintaining organizational policies, bylaws, meeting minutes, agendas, and resolutions.
Develop and manage the legal department’s budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
Provide legal oversight and support for strategic initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and compliance requirements.
Advise the HR team on federal, multi-state, and international employment laws, supporting compliance and mitigating legal risk.
Counsel the leadership team on legal considerations related to programmatic and operational initiatives.
Oversee the organization’s data privacy and security program, including developing policies, conducting training, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
Lead the creation of legal training materials, guidance documents, and educational programs for employees and contractors.
Manage the organization’s insurance portfolio and oversee intellectual property matters, including trademarks and copyrights.
Establish, manage, and maintain relationships with external legal counsel as needed.
Develop and execute the organization’s legal strategy, including advising on employment, tax, and regulatory matters related to Mothers to Daughters’ global expansion.
Monitor and ensure organizational compliance with applicable laws and regulations; conduct legal research to stay informed of emerging legal trends and requirements.
Partner with the HR team to implement global employment policies, update the employee handbook, deliver compliance training, and provide legal support for international growth.
Review, draft, and negotiate a variety of agreements, including employment contracts and other organizational agreements.
Qualifications and Skills:
Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
Active bar membership in good standing.
15+ years of legal experience, including work at a top local or international law firm and at least 5 years of in-house counsel experience.
Proven experience supporting a global nonprofit organization, with the ability to work effectively across cultures and with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
Strong legal judgment and critical thinking skills, with the ability to analyze complex issues and provide practical, solutions-oriented legal advice.
Demonstrated ability to distill and simplify complex legal concepts, making sound decisions aligned with the organization’s best interests.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey legal information clearly and appropriately to a variety of audiences, including employees, senior leadership, and external stakeholders.
Skilled in conflict resolution, with the ability to anticipate, de-escalate, and manage disputes constructively to achieve positive outcomes.
Strategic thinker with the ability to proactively identify risks, anticipate challenges, and develop innovative, forward-thinking solutions.
Strong business acumen, with the ability to align legal strategies with organizational objectives.
Commitment:
Serve on the Board of Directors for 1 year.
Attend all monthly board meetings and key organizational events as required.
Approximate time commitment: 5-7 hours per month
